Tim was born in Mechanicsville, Virginia, 10 miles north of Richmond. His mother was a member of the "Old Dominion Barndance," where Tim debuted as a performer at age 3.

Raised in his family's band, Tim accompanied his mother, father, two brothers and two sisters performing throughout Virginia. His family band opened shows for Dolly Parton and Porter Waggoner, The Wilburn Brothers featuring Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash and Joe and Rosalie Maphis among others. Tim was playing mandolin in the band at age 8.

Though it never dampened his love for music, Tim suffered from a severe hearing disorder in his early years. And, as a young man, he was very much a loner. But after seven ear operations, he finally overcame the hearing problem that had interrupted his schooling for weeks at a time. By the time he was 16, Tim was digesting every word of every guitar magazine within his reach and writing country songs.
